Summer Conversations

25 Mar

Dreaming of the end of school and summer seems a bit farfetched when you’re inside on a Sunday afternoon finishing up final assignments for school. To get in the mood about the nicer weather coming our way, I went to Starbucks and ordered their Passion Tazo Lemonade. The sweetness of the raspberry and the tartness of the lemon mixed together is the perfect afternoon pick-me-up. Not to mention, the dripping condensation from the cup reminds you that it really  is a sunny, 13 degrees outside! Hearing the birds chirping and the chattering of voices outside, tells me the outdoor season has officially begun!

My Mom treated us to sundaes for dessert that evening. It reminded me of this great ice parlour The Big Chill near Kensington Market in Toronto. Banana splits, milkshakes, smoothies, and just plain ice cream in a cone is the perfect staple for those warmer, hazy days. Another great “summery” place to hang out in Toronto is The Blue Banana Market located in Kensington Market. This place is the perfect setting for everything summer.

It has a bohemian, hippie-chic vibe to it. The vintage and modern pieces the store has to offer is geared towards both men and women, kids, and older folks looking for something that will inspire them for summer or any other time of the year.

It’s also the season of the summer tunes! A good summer playlist is essential, especially for days at the beach, cottage, or just lounging around the house. A few songs that are perfect for this time of year are: “Surfing” by The Drums, “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People, and “Shuffle” by Bombay Bicycle Club.

Food is the absolute best part of the season. Whether it is barbecues, picnics (indoors or outdoors), at the cottage, or hanging out at home; everyone needs to have that perfect summer menu.
Going to theme parks can help you get into the food mood. The smell of carnival food, will make anyones mouth water, no matter what your age is. Really great places to get carnival food is at any carnival, or you can wait until late August for The C.N.E in Toronto. (or as most people call it “The EX”. The Canadian National Exhibition. This year it’s running from August 17-September 3.

Finally, to wrap up my carnival food frenzy, the best thing to have anytime is an ice cream float. YUMMY! The richness of the ice cream in the bubbly goodness of your favourite soft drink will make you want seconds of this delectable treat!

Get ready for summer in style this year!

Season of the Concerts

21 Mar

The summer concert season is upon us!

SXSW has just wrapped up in Austin, and Coachella is nearing the horizon. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival begins April 13 and ends April 15, 2012 in Indio, California.

In its 11 years as a festival (staring in 2001), it draws hundreds of thousands of music lovers each year. This year, a stellar line up of musical acts will flock to “The place to be”. Many musical  heavyweights include: The Black Keys, Radiohead, Florence + The Machine, and The Arctic Monkeys.

Along with Coachella and SXSW, there are many Canadian summer festivals. On July 14, 2012 in Toronto’s very own Downsview Park, concert-goers will be rocking out at Edgefest! This Canadian summer concert series has been going strong for 25 years starting out at Molson Park on July 1, 1987 and continuing onto Downsview Park in July 2008. Many bands headlining have included: Blue Rodeo, Green Day, Billy Talent, Tokyo Police Club, The Arkells, and Rise Against.

As the summer winds down, the concerts keep on coming; another famous Canadian summer concert comes to town. This time, Montreal’s Jean Drapeau Parc is hosting Osheaga from August 3-5, 2012. Drawing a strong crowd of 25,000 back in 2006 when it first started, Osheaga is the perfect weekend getaway before going back to school!

During the same weekend, Grant Park in Chicago will be hosting Lollapalooza. Going strong in Grant Park since 2005, Lollapalooza is the “Alternative Nation”, (coined by producer Perry Farrell). Drawing in crowds of 65,000+, this is another perfect weekend destination before heading back to school.
